Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said the player after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
