The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
