The Long-Awaited Lesson on Modding: Warframe's New Quest Corrects a Longstanding Issue
The popular online game known as Warframe, a title where you can feed yourself to a giant mouth and pilot futuristic vehicles, has released a significant update. The Vallis Undermind exemplifies the distinctive charm that has come to define Warframe in recent years.
The new content, made available this week, introduces a new mushroom-themed warframe that does a little dance, along with a brand-new biome to discover. However, it also revisits core concepts, with another quest designed to making sure this complicated, expansive 12-year-old MMO is accessible for new players.
The Arrival of "The Teacher"
Named âThe Teacher,â this is the long-awaited quest that educates Warframe players on how to use one of the game's most basic â yet most intricate systems: the mod system.
In Warframe, mods are augments that can be added to your character or your weapons to improve their stats. These can be simple (boosting power or shortening reload times) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often craft hour-long videos about optimized loadouts that use powerful mods in combination to create devastating effects.
âI think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, encountering mods without grasping their purpose,â noted a key developer. âWe believed it was crucial, at the end of the quest, for players to think, âWow, modding is interesting. I'd like to experiment further.ââ
A Collaborative Effort
âThe Teacherâ was developed in a collaboration between the original developers, who provided the narrative sauce, and an external team, who crafted the gameplay, which will be introduced to new players.
In the quest, the player is tasked with obtaining a new segment for their spaceship, but theyâre confronted by a formidable foe called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and close-combat arms, and compels them to use the mod system to effectively show its potential.
Several developers were already fans of the game, but some were newcomers, according to a lead designer. This fresh viewpoint that was essential.
âThe first thing we did was basically sit behind them and have them experience the introduction and take prodigious notes on all points of confusion,â the designer said. Introductory tutorials presented the mod system. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone.
âCertain players missed fundamental guidance where it's flashing on the screen saying equip the modification,â he said.
Filling a Significant Gap
Warframeâs mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that fill the display with damage values. But "The Teacher" isnât really about that. Veteran users who wish the quest was geared more towards their needs, like creating powerful and specific builds. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for newcomers â and that doing so isnât as simple as it looks.
âThereâs lots of little tweaks and little subtle things in the background there to just demonstrate the possibilities rather than explain it outright,â the designer said. For example, one of the mission's objectives is to show how mods can create elemental damage types; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields.
âAdjustments to the armament to be a rapid-fire gun, because it shows off the proc rate more,â the designer said. âBut you donât want to say to people, 'with a basic modification, you only got a low probability to proc an elemental effect.' So how do you tutorialize that without changing it?â
Veterans will naturally recognize these mechanics and grasp their function, but new players have to be taught to pay attention to these things.
âItâs not a kind of game development that we've had to worry about as much just because that hasn't been our focus,â said a story developer. âBut part of it not being our focus that we never really told people how to use mods.â
Months of Effort
âA tremendous amount of work is required for just making a seemingly straightforward quest that â frankly â you can complete quickly,â said the designer. âYet it represents extensive development for loads of people.â
The designer was clearly enthusiastic over being able to work on a game that he loves â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.
âI love Teshin,â he said. âHe's my 8-year-old internal self's idea of what's cool.â
Improving the New Player Experience
In the decade-plus since launch, Warframe has been in a consistent battle with its own new user introduction. There are lots of complex systems that players donât need to worry about â and won't encounter until much later. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on your level of engagement. A previous patch improved the introductory experience so that players could reach Warframeâs complex narrative arcs with less time on the grind up front.
With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are reinforcing their dedication to make sure Warframeâs early game experience evolves beyond its origins. Beginners can find their way â even if they miss the menu prompts.
