Reece Walsh Shines as Ruthless Australia Defeat The Hosts Aside in Opening Ashes Test
The home side's attacking frailties were laid bare and capitalized on by a clinical Australia as the visitors swept to a surprisingly comfortable victory in the opening Test of the rugby league Ashes series.
Shaun Waneâs team had talked at length about their drive going into the first Ashes for over two decades, and they were certainly not short on effort at Wembley. Yet, in the crucial moments, it was the world champions who showed more composure in front of a record attendance for an Ashes Test in the United Kingdom of more than 60,000.
Brilliant Display from Walsh
Guided by an outstanding showing in offense and defense from Brisbane Broncosâ Walsh, the Kangaroos were deserving and convincing winners in the first match of the three-match series, meaning England must triumph at Evertonâs Hill Dickinson Stadium next Saturday to sustain their hopes of a series victory since the 1970s.
England will have to be significantly improved with the possession if they are to accomplish that goal. On multiple occasions in the opening period, the home team found themselves in promising positions but they were failed to score for any tries. That was in large measure thanks to Walsh, who pulled off two superb interceptions.
Crucial Plays of the Match
The first occurred as Farnworth seemed certain to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then Walsh stopped Mikey Lewis as half-time neared. By then, the Kangaroos had taken the lead as Walsh himself finished a wonderful play.
Nathan Cleary added the extras before adding a two-pointer on the stroke of half-time to open up a eight-point advantage. It was a pivotal moment, as was the try for Angus Crichton shortly after the restart which made it 14-0 in favour of the Kangaroos. England now had to score three times and that seemed to halt their drive.
If there were any doubt about the victors, they were decisively settled with a quarter-hour to go. Munster's line break was supported by Crichton, who pushed past Jack Welsby for Australiaâs third try.
That made it twenty to zero and there was added disappointment in the final minutes as Walsh finished another scintillating move, exploiting a weary and visibly shot England defensive line for his second.
Match Result and Outlook
By then, local supporters had begun to leave early and many did not see Daryl Clarkâs late try, which at least avoided the home side finishing scoreless. However, there are plenty of questions for the coach to address going into what is now a do-or-die Test next Saturday.
