Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

Global audiences mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice was instrumental in spreading reggae music across the globe. He has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit earned him a large and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

He is one of just a handful of artists, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
