A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
