Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
